How Light Can Damage
Our Eyes:
All light is a form of energy. When our
eyes absorb light, the process creates
heat or chemical reactions in eye tissue.
These reactions can cause permanent
damage if the eye’s natural ability to heal
itself is overwhelmed.
Different parts of the eye absorb different
kinds of light. For example The surface layers of the outer part
of the eyeball (the cornea and the
conjunctiva) absorb UV-B rays
• The lens absorbs mainly UV-A rays
• The retina (the light-sensitive lining at
the back of the inner eyeball)
absorbs visible light
If eyes are overexposed to ultraviolet
radiation, the front portion of the eyes
may be damaged. If visible light is too
bright or intense, or if someone stares
directly at the sun, even briefly, the retina
can be damaged, causing permanent
loss of vision.
Proecting Your Skin:
Sun Bathing
A deep tan is not cool anymore. A little exposure to the sun provides some Vitamin D. Cancer can be caused when you get too much sun. It can also cause your skin to age prematurely.
Sunlight contains two kinds of ultra violet light rays. UVB causes sunburn and can make you more susceptible to cancer. UVA increase the risk of cancer, skin aging and other skin diseases.
Sunscreen is marked with ratings. A high rating is best. Everyone should use sunscreen. Fair -skinned people should be more careful in the sun. The risk is greater when you are around water because the sun reflects off of the water. Reapply sunscreen often and every time you return from the water even if the product says it is waterproof. There is no such thing as waterproof sunscreen.
Sunscreen MUST be reapplied everytime you come out of the water.

Swimmer's Ear
This occurs when there is too much moisture in the ear. A pool without the right amount of chlorine in it or fresh water that is contaminated will cause an infection.Be sure to get all of the water out of your ear by tilting your head first to one side and then to the other . Use a swim cap or ear plugs. If you use earplugs use silicone ear plugs not wax ones.
